In the dim tunnel, with the walls echoing the throbs of a silent aftermath, I stood over Jayix, my blade alight with a fiery determination.

The creature, severely wounded, bore its gaze into mine.

Those bottomless, soulless black orbs seemed to penetrate, trying to dissect my resolve.

It hissed, a sound eerily human, its claw pressed against the gaping wound on its abdomen.

The ichorous fluid oozed onto the ground, creating a pool of sickly darkness.

I could see the creature’s mind working, weighing its options.

With every beat of its heart, it was losing strength, and while it had the advantage in terms of raw power, I had a weapon it clearly feared.

“Stay away,” I growled, brandishing the blade higher, its shimmering light casting tall, wavering shadows against the tunnel walls.

The blade was more than just a weapon; it was a symbol of my intent, my refusal to let Jayix’s sacrifice be in vain.

The creature took a staggered step back, its breathing ragged.

Then, another step, its gaze never leaving mine.

The intelligence in those eyes unnerved me; this wasn’t just a primal beast.

It was a thinking, calculating adversary.

One that recognized when the odds were no longer in its favor.

For a brief moment, our world was reduced to just the two of us, a silent understanding passing between predator and protector.

It was contemplating, hesitating, perhaps even reflecting on its own vulnerability.

I took a bold step forward, positioning myself firmly between the creature and Jayix, making it abundantly clear that to get to him, it would have to go through me.

My heart raced, knowing that in its desperate state, it might just take the chance.

But then, something shifted.

A subtle change in its demeanor.

The creature’s eyes flicked once to the luminous blade in my hand and then back to my face.

With a guttural snarl, an unmistakable note of warning, it slowly started to retreat.

Each step it took was deliberate, a dance of pride mixed with pragmatism.

I watched, my every sense alert, ready for any last-minute lunge or attack.

But it simply kept moving backward, fading into the depths of the tunnel until it was nothing more than a silhouette, and then, gone entirely.

As the immediate threat dissipated, the adrenaline that had kept me standing began to wane, and I felt the weight of everything that had transpired bearing down on me.

My hands trembled as I deactivated my blade, and my knees threatened to buckle.

But Jayix.

My priority now was Jayix.

I knelt beside him, pressing my fingers to his neck, searching for any signs of life.

He was breathing, albeit weakly, and his heart—or whatever Shreigims had—was still beating.

But the full extent of his injuries was unclear in the dim light of the tunnel.

“Jayix,” I whispered, brushing the dirt and grime from his face, “Stay with me. You have to stay with me.”

He lay motionless, his once radiant eyes now dull and unseeing.

As the silence enveloped us, a chill ran down my spine.

The beast might have retreated, but it wasn’t defeated.

It had shown itself to be intelligent, cunning, and more than capable of strategic retreats.
